Kokoda Track Trekking Itinerary

  The Kokoda Track is a renowned trek across the Owen Stanley Range in Papua New Guinea, covering approximately 97 kilometres. It offers a challenging yet rewarding adventure 


through lush landscapes and historical sites. The following itinerary is designed for an 11-day trip, with 8 days of trekking, allowing for a thorough and immersive experience.



Trip Details

  • Total Duration: 11 days
  • Walking Days: 8 days
  • Accommodation: 2 nights in hotels, 8 nights camping
  • Meals: All meals included
  • Transport: All transport in-country


Day 1: Arrival in Port Moresby

 · Fly from Australia to Port Moresby.

· Meet and greet with the trekking team upon arrival.

· Overnight stay in a hotel.

Day 2: Owers' Corner to Ioribaiwa Village

  • Morning: Transfer by bus (40 minutes) from the hotel to Owers’ Corner to begin the trek.
  • Afternoon: Experience river crossings and ascents, including a climb to Imita Ridge. Descend to Ua-Ule Creek, with the day’s trek highlighting Ioribaiwa (the furthest point of the Japanese advance during WWII).
  • Overnight: Camp at Ioribaiwa Village

Day 3: Ioribaiwa to Nauro

  • Morning: climb to top of Ioribaiwa ridge after some sightseeing, we descend to at Ofi Creek for a refreshing break 
  • Afternoon: traverse the southern side of the Maguli Range, till we reach the top of the range then continue downhill to Nauro.
  • Overnight:Camp at Nauro 

Day 4: Nauro to Menari

  •   Morning: Depart from Nauro and navigate through extraordinary views, heading towards the Naoro River (browns River).
  • Afternoon: Cross “The Wall” and reach Menari, a historic village with connections to the 39th battalion.
  • Overnight: Camp at Menari.

Day 5: Menari to Efogi 2

  •  Morning: Pay our respects at Brigade Hill with a service, continue on to Efogi 1.
  • Afternoon:  cool down with a swim before making the last climb of the day, Arrive at Efogi 2.
  • Overnight: Camp at Efogi 2.

Day 6: Efogi 2 to 1900 Campsite

  

  • Morning: Trek to Naduri village, followed by a sharp climb and exploration of the moss garden.
  • Afternoon: Continue to Myola Lake 2 and set up camp at the 1900 Campsite.
  • Overnight: Camp at 1900 Campsite.

Day 7: 1900 Campsite to Templeton’s crossing

  •  Morning:  Ascend to the highest point on the track at Mount Bellamy (2186 meters).
  • Afternoon: Descend on to Eora creek so short ups and down before reaching Templeton’s camp site.
  • Overnight: Camp at Templeton’s.

Day 8: Templeton’s crossing to Isurava Battle Site

  

  • Morning: Begin the trek to the Isurava Battle Site, passing through Eora Creek and the Japanese lower defensive positions.
  • Afternoon: Explore the Isurava Battle Site and reflect on the historical      significance.
  • Overnight: Camp near Isurava.

Day 9: Isurava to Kokoda

  •   Morning: Attend the dawn service at the Isurava Battle Site, watch the sunrise light up Yoda Valley.
  • Afternoon: enjoy the views from Deniki Continue downhill to Hoi where we will rest for lunch, before trekking to Kokoda.
  • Overnight: Camp at Kokoda.

Day 10: Return to Port Moresby


  • Morning: Charter flight from Kokoda to Port Moresby.
  • Afternoon: Transfer to your hotel, visit to Bomana War Cemetery.
  • Dinner: Farwell dinner
  • Overnight: Hotel in Port Moresby.

Day 11: Departure

  

  • Breakfast at hotel
  • Morning: Flight home to Australia.


 This itinerary offers a comprehensive and engaging adventure, balancing the physical challenge of the trek with opportunities to immerse in the rich history and stunning natural beauty of the Kokoda Track. Adjustments can be made based on group or individual needs.
